Electromechanical Design: Mechanism Design

A collection of assignments ranging from most to least complex

Advanced 4 Bar Mechanism Design

For this assignment we were tasked with designing a trashcan equipped with a 4 bar mechanism responsible for moving a trash tray from the top of a trash can to the back.

After countless attempts (including a hanging design), all of which locked up or didn’t meet the assignments requirements, I realized the equation behind the mechanism locking up a specific case of Grashof's law

Applying this in solid works as relations instead of dimensions allowed me to generate an entire set of solutions and iterate faster

Final Product

Even after solving the mechanism problem, the linkage and pivots intersected in more than one position. This was solved by cleverly shaping the linkage around these intersections.

Container Door Opener

A similar method to the trashcan was employed, using SolidWorks relations.

Simple Exercises

This type of crank rocker set up can be used in conjunction with other 4 bar mechanisms to limit travel.

This linkage could be used as a lift gate hinge, allowing a counter worker more table space and freedom of motion.
